Privacy Policy

Shiritai (“we”, “us”) operates the Shiritai Japanese reading and study tool. Shiritai adds furigana readings to Japanese text and explains text you select with translation, grammar, vocabulary, kanji, and JLPT notes. You can reach us at support@shiritai.app.

What we do not collect:we do not use third-party advertising or analytics trackers, we do not sell your data, and furigana readings are generated entirely in your browser. We never collect payment information — Shiritai is free.

Account information (optional)

Creating an account is optional — you can use Shiritai without one. If you sign up, we store your email address and a salted, hashed password (we never see or store your plain-text password). If you sign in with Google, we receive the name and email address you share with us. Registered accounts get a higher daily explanation limit.

The Japanese text you submit

When you paste text or use “Explain with Shiritai”, that text is sent to our server and forwarded to our AI provider to generate your study card. We do not store the text you submit in our database. Avoid submitting anything private or sensitive.

Fair-use and security data

To keep Shiritai free and reliable, we use a randomly generated browser cookie to count explanations for visitors who are not signed in, and we use your IP address to rate-limit requests and prevent abuse. This counting data is not linked to your identity.

We use your information to provide the service (generate explanations), to enforce fair-use limits, to protect against abuse, and to fix bugs.

We do not use your data to train AI models.The Japanese text you submit is sent to OpenAI solely to produce your explanation. OpenAI’s API does not use customer API inputs or outputs to train its models.

We use only the cookies needed to run the service. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, and we do not respond to Do Not Track signals because we do not track you across other sites.

You can clear these cookies anytime from your browser settings, which signs you out and resets anonymous usage.

• Submitted text: processed to generate your explanation and not stored in our database. Short-lived server logs used for debugging may temporarily include request details.
• Account data: retained until you delete your account, then removed within a reasonable period.
• Fair-use & rate-limit data: kept for as long as needed to enforce limits and prevent abuse.

• Explanations are generated by OpenAI’s AI models.
• Your submitted text is not used to train or fine-tune AI models.
• AI output is probabilistic and may contain inaccuracies. Treat explanations as a study aid, not a definitive reference.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, email us at support@shiritai.app. We respond within 30 days. Shiritai does not sell personal information.

Your data may be processed by OpenAI and Google in the United States (and other regions as part of normal internet routing). Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses.

Shiritai is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 where applicable), and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has provided data, contact us and we will delete it.

We protect data in transit with HTTPS, store passwords only as salted hashes, and use httpOnly session cookies. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
